EU Approves World’s 1st Green Bond Standards to Avoid Greenwashing

- European Union (EU) lawmakers approved new standards for companies issuing “green” bonds to help
investors by enabling them to distinguish truly
sustainable companies from those engaged in
greenwashing or misleading climate-friendly
claims. These standards introduce the “European
Green Bond” label, representing a first-of-itskind global initiative.
- Europe has emerged as a global leader in the
issuance of green bonds, representing over 50%
of the total volume in 2021, issuance is still only
3% to 3.5% of the overall bond market
- Companies aiming to categorise their bonds as
“green” must disclose detailed information
regarding the use of bond proceeds. Companies
must allocate at least 85% of raised funds to
activities aligned with the EU’s sustainable
taxonomy.
- In addition to sustainable allocation, companies must demonstrate how these investments contribute to
their transition to a net-zero carbon emissions economy
- The new standards establish a registration system and supervisory framework for external reviewers of
